The prehistoric Caves of Sare

Third most visited site in the Basque Country, the Caves of Sare offer a one-hour guided tour with sound and light show.

During the tour, along a fully equipped path to allow most people to visit it, three topics are addressed :

  • the unusual geology of a rather dry cave;
  • a prehistoric habitation;
  • the origins and mythology of the Basque people according to anthropologist José-Miguel de Barandiaran.

You will have free access to our museum to discover Human evolution from prehistory to the present day and to the megalithic park explaining what megalithism in the Basque Country is.

Listed among the most beautiful villages of France, Sare is a huddled village at the foot of the famous Basque mountain called «La Rhune».

Xareta : Sare, Ainhoa, Zugarramurdi, Urdax-Urdazubi

With the villages of Ainhoa, Zugarramurdi and Urdazubi/Urdax in Navarra, Sare is located in the Xareta cross-border area Xareta.

Throughout history (Carlist Wars, World Wars) and in its activities (smuggling, night work…), Sare has always had privileged relationships with the other provinces of the Basque country on both sides of the border.
